Start by going to your admin dashboard and go to Settings, General to configure.
Go to the membership area and click anyone can register and set the default user to subscriber.
Next decide how you want to show the signup.
One method is to add the meta widget to the sidebar which will allow any user to click log in and sign up.
Now activate stop spammers plugin to help avoid spam users.
Go to Settings, Stop Spammers to configure the plugin.
Finally you can manage users in the user tab of the admin dashboard and delete any user that should not be there.
