Setting Up Categories

Now you've got your first blog entry published! Open a new Browser window (by the way, I don't recommend using Internet Explorer - you're better of with some other browser.

Now, just type http://xxxxx.xom in the address bar and voila! There's your brand new blog. It should look pretty much like mine at this point.

Go back to your WP Admin window. Click on the Manage tab, and you'll see a list of your posts. There should be two posts: your latest entry, and the Wordpress "Hello, World" entry. At this moment, mine looks like this:

Now, just hit Edit to edit your latest post, so we can start using Categories.
On the right, you'll see some expandable menus. Hit the + sign next to Categories and you'll find a box where you can type a category for your post, as well as a list of your categories, with box checked for each category that this particular post is linked to. Right now you'll just see the category "Uncategorized" checked, so you'll want to add some new categories. Like this:

Wordpress Categories

Categories are important in making your blog a part of Web2.0. You'll want to end up with about 10-15 categories total. Your readers can then browse your posts by the categories they are interested in. You can later use your Categories to your advantage, because you can link them to social bookmarking sites such as del.icio.us and Wordpress will also use your categories as Technorati tags.

Think up a few categories for your first post, and go a head and add them. After you're done, finish by clicking the Save button at the bottom of the post editing field.
